On a mission to address common issues and highlight new developments in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum, in collaboration with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI), organized an engaging panel discussion. The event drew the participation of over 75 people with MS (PwMS) and their families, fostering a vibrant exchange of knowledge and experiences.
The panel featured esteemed experts:
- Dr. Sureshkumar R (Senior Consultant Neurology, Renai Medicity, Ernakulam)
- Dr. Lakshmi C.P (Gastroenterologist, The Gastro Centre, Trivandrum)
- Dr. Jijo Varghese (Assistant Professor, Department of PMR, SCTIMST)
- Ms. Lekshmy K (Psychologist, Co-developer & practitioner of MUCBT)
- The discussion was skillfully moderated by Dr. Sruthi S. Nair (Additional Professor, Department of Neurology, SCTIMST).
The panelists delved into pressing issues faced by PwMS, including the latest advancements in medication. They addressed pre-collected questions from MSSI members, ensuring a comprehensive coverage of concerns. A significant topic of interest among younger PwMS was pregnancy, with panelists providing detailed guidance and reassurance.
Critical issues such as bowel and bladder management were also discussed. Dr. Varghese demonstrated simple techniques for bowel movement, while Dr. Lakshmi emphasized the importance of good dietary habits and the crucial role of gut bacteria. These insights were particularly enlightening for many attendees.
The session also highlighted mental health, with Ms. Lekshmy stressing the importance of psychological well-being. She addressed numerous questions on cognitive dysfunction, explaining how proper training can significantly improve cognitive functions.
Adding a philanthropic touch to the event, the M.C. Korah Memorial Charitable Society, a notable organization from Pathanamthitta, Kerala, generously funded INR 1.5 lakhs to SCTIMST for the treatment of MS patients. Mr. Abraham Thomas, the society’s secretary, was honored during the event for this benevolent contribution.
This panel discussion not only provided valuable information and support to PwMS and their families but also underscored the importance of collaboration and community in navigating the challenges of Multiple Sclerosis.
